ChatGPT is currently undergoing testing to incorporate support for Model Context Protocol (MCP). This integration aims to enhance its capability to connect with third-party services, allowing ChatGPT to utilize external data for context during interactions.

MCP serves as an open-source standard designed for developers to expose external data via this protocol, enabling AI platforms like ChatGPT to perform tasks that require external information. This functionality permits potential connectivity with applications such as Gmail, allowing ChatGPT to access and utilize relevant information to assist users effectively.

While the consumer-facing applications of MCP may be limited, its implications for enterprise environments could be transformative. Businesses would have the ability to link their internal tools with ChatGPT, facilitating seamless data sharing when necessary.

Recent observations highlighted by industry expert Tibor on X note that ChatGPT is testing a new configuration setting, referred to as Connectors. This feature permits users to customize their experience by adding new tools.

Upon engaging this feature, users can access a form to input the name, URL, and description of their custom tool. This development presents the opportunity for ChatGPT to integrate with proprietary applications or APIs, thereby enhancing its functionality.

At present, MCP support is still undergoing internal trials within OpenAI, and a formal announcement regarding this feature is anticipated in the near future.
