Microsoft has announced the introduction of a text formatting feature within the Notepad application for Windows 11, now supporting input in Markdown-style. This update follows the removal of the WordPad application, which included basic text formatting capabilities, during the rollout of Windows 11 24H2 to Insider participants in the Release Preview Channel.<\/p>\n
According to Dave Grochocki, Principal Product Manager Lead at Microsoft, “With this update, we are introducing lightweight formatting in Notepad, providing additional flexibility in how you structure content across your files.” Users will now be able to utilize a new formatting toolbar to apply stylings such as bold and italic, insert hyperlinks, and create simple lists and headings, all while typing or selecting text.<\/p>\n
To revert to plain text in any opened document, users can easily remove formatting through the toolbar or edit menu. Furthermore, a toggle feature is available to switch between formatted Markdown and Markdown syntax views directly from the view menu or the status bar. Users who prefer not to utilize text formatting can disable this option in the app settings.<\/p>\n
This functionality is currently being rolled out to all Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels, contingent upon the application being updated to version 11.2504.50.0.<\/p>\n
This update is part of a broader initiative to modernize the Notepad application, a process that commenced in December 2021 with the launch of a completely redesigned Notepad app for Windows 11, marking 38 years since the original program was introduced in 1983. In subsequent updates, Microsoft started testing support for multiple tabs and included a built-in character counter\u2014features that many users had sought, prompting reliance on third-party alternatives like Notepad++.<\/p>\n
In July 2024, Microsoft introduced spell check and autocorrect functionalities in Notepad for all Windows 11 users, allowing for automatic correction of spelling errors as they occur. Recently, enhancements have included the rollout of AI-powered features such as text summarization and text generation for Windows 11 Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels, which require appropriate Microsoft 365 subscriptions.<\/p>\n
