Meta to Implement Comprehensive Passkey Support for Facebook on Mobile Devices

Meta is set to enhance security for Facebook and Messenger users by integrating passkeys as a login option on mobile devices. Announced on June 18, this feature will be available for both the Facebook app and the Messenger app in the near future.

Passkeys provide a secure alternative to traditional passwords, permitting users to access websites and applications through biometric identification methods such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or PIN codes. This method of authentication is considered more resilient against phishing attacks compared to SMS or email-based multi-factor authentication techniques.

The underlying technology of passkeys was developed by the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance, a collaborative body aimed at minimizing the global dependence on passwords. Meta is an active member of this alliance.

Users will gain the ability to establish and manage their passkey settings through Facebook’s and Messenger’s Accounts Center, found in the Settings menu.

Spencer Starkey, Executive Vice President for EMEA at SonicWall, emphasized the importance of such security measures: “Implementing this solution allows organizations to defend their employees, customers, and partners from email-based threats while ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of their communications.”

A report from May 2025 noted that over one-third (36%) of individuals have experienced at least one online account compromise due to weak or stolen passwords within the preceding year. Additionally, approximately half (48%) of the world’s top 100 websites have adopted passkey support, reflecting a growing shift toward more secure login methods.
